:: cny ::
for most kids, cny is prob the best part of the year, due to all the goodies as well as the ang baos. but for me, cny is a commeration of our chinese culture in a cosmopolitian city such as singapore, where ones roots are easily lost. especially in my sch where the english culture is much more celebrated than their chinese counterparts. however, many of us noticed a distinct change in this tradition, especially from the cny performance. even the teachers were amazed. when they dropped the curtain, i saw mrs chans round of applause in approval, and i suddenly felt all that i have been thru is worth it. not that i m looking for solace in winning the approval beside me, but it makes things so much easier to bear.
as i was watching the chinese orchestra (CO) performing, i began to think about what the chinese were thinking as they used their imagination to create this culture that has been handed down for ten thousands of years. as the chinese call themselves the people of splendor and their country the middle kingdom, the music really reflected this spirit in them. most of the music made you feel that there is a sense of majestic and splendid aura around. it was then that i really felt proud to be chinese.
just now when i was at the reunion dinner, i began reflecting again. probably i have grown more mature or smt, but i began to appreciate my family status. smt quite natural to me, changing cars every few years or having two cars to go out in, is actually quite a luxury to some others. to someone who just changed their car, it is prob smt to be proud of this cny. but to me, i have been ferried around in a merz and yet i m still complaining. what a snob i have been! and when i have been splurging my pocket money away, many others are living from hand to mouth, scrimping and saving whenever they can. i felt really bad that dinner. they are not exactly poor, prob earning more than my dad, but not wasting even a scrap of food. it really pricked my conscience and hence my new year resolution is to be more thrifty, as each cent is earned with sweat and blood!
now on a lighter note, its one minute to the year of the pig! haha... let me wish all of you a very happy chinese new year!
